The modern Mother’s Day was first celebrated in this country in 1907, when Anna Jarvis held the first Mother's Day service of worship at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which serves as the International Mother's Day Shrine today. A peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, Ann Jarvis’ campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother died.
This year, celebrate Mother’s Day by taking her to brunch and a show. Come to the Embassy for light lunch fare, a complimentary mimosa, and tickets for the matinee of “Little Women” that afternoon. Seating is limited, so get your tickets at embassy.ticketbud.com/little-women-may11matinee, or call to reserve (with at least 24 hour notice) at (240) 362-7183.

Join us on Mother's Day, May 11, 2025 for our Mother's Day Brunch before the matinee performance of "Little Women".
We will serve a light collation with a complementary mimosa for $36 per person, with admission to the classic "Little Women" that afternoon.
Brunch will be served at 11 AM, two hours before the theatre doors open for the performance.
Please call the Embassy at (240) 362-7183 for more information and to make reservations for the special Mother's Day brunch. We ask that reservations for this event be made by Friday, May 9. Seating is limited.
"Little Women" is a play adapted by Kate Hamill from the novel by Louisa May Alcott.
Jo March isn’t your typical Victorian lady. She’s indecorous and headstrong; one day, she will be a great American novelist. In a war-torn world defined by gender, class, and personal tragedy, Jo March gives us her greatest story: that of the March sisters, four dreamers destined to be imperfect little women.
The show runs May 9 - 18, with Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. An additional Saturday matinee is on May 10 at 2 p.m.
The Embassy is located at 49 Baltimore Street in newly landscaped downtown Cumberland. Free parking is available weekends and evenings at the CBIZ parking lot on Mechanic St.
